A Current Project
Whispers Now Rising: The Stories My Mother Carried from the Vietnam Wars
Whispers Now Rising is an ongoing multidisciplinary project of painting and poetry by Belinda Lê Wells, created in honor of her mother, Lê Thị Sam, and all those whose lives have been shaped by war. Born in the United States, Belinda was deeply moved when she first visited Vietnam as a young adult—suddenly, the stories her mother had shared throughout her life took on new dimensions. “Ever since visiting my mother’s homeland, Vietnam, the dream of telling her stories through art has been stretched out across my soul, quietly nudging at my creative mind,” she reflects. “Although she is no longer with us physically, I believe, now more than ever, that I need to share my mother’s stories with the world. Her stories matter.”
As a child, her mother’s quiet accounts of survival were like bedtime lullabies—intimate memories carried across oceans and generations. Now, fifty years after the end of the Vietnam War, Belinda returns to those stories as both daughter and artist, translating them into layered brushwork and verse. Whispers Now Rising is both a personal act of remembrance and a public offering of healing, exploring the emotional landscapes of war, displacement, and resilience. It lifts up voices long left in silence and invites reflection on the enduring ties between history, identity, and home.
