Every month, the Arts Council funds wonderful community art projects and professional development opportunities at up to $1,000. Five projects received funding last month:

Local Artist Elise Bernal was selected for an artist-in-residency program at the Institute 4 Labor Generosity Workers & Uniforms, International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union and Sewing Rebellion project space at 322 Elm Ave. During her six-week residency, Bernal will work on large-scale interactive textile wall hangings, a small interactive textile sculpture, illustrations and zines as part of a project called Self-Care Share. She will also hold open studio hours and participate in the 2nd Saturday Art Walk on September 10.

Artist King Cre8 is hosting a presentation, discussion and art workshop for aspiring street artists age nine and up. The workshop takes place at Homeland Cultural Center on Sunday, August 28 from 1–3 p.m. Participants will learn a variety of practical skills including the history of street art, color theory and career advice.

Belmont Heights Artists’ Association is holding a group art show at Viento y Agua Coffeehouse and Gallery in October. The show will help local artists network and collaborate and allow café visitors to see and purchase their work.

Fellowship Art Fair takes place on September 9 from 12–4 p.m. at the Connection Church parking lot at 2325 E. 3rd St. The fair is free and open to the public and serves low income and needy families in Long Beach by providing services and education. Children will participate in group artistic programs at the art station that include: drawing themselves as a super hero, drawing a family portrait and art with chalk.

MADD INC (Music, Art, Drama and Dance Incorporating New Creativity) is Rising TIDE’s nine-week summer immersion program. The program’s goal is to educate and empower more than 100 disadvantaged children and youth by encouraging creative pursuits and self-expression through arts. The program, which ran from 3:30–6:30 p.m. every Tuesday from June 23 through August 18, culminated in an open house for students to showcase their newly honed artistic talents for family, friends and the entire Long Beach community.
