Eye on Design is the Arts Council’s 15-week public art education program for third-grade students in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD). Through the program, a teaching artist in residence guides students through the process of developing a public artwork. Students study various forms of public art, research their surrounding neighborhoods and create a public artwork to install in Long Beach.

Joining the Arts Council to teach the Eye on Design program for 2016–2017 is social practice artist, Betty Rosen. For 15 years, Betty has been conducting community workshops that result in one-of-a-kind mosaic artworks. She is a returning Eye on Design teaching artist in residence with the Arts Council and is passionate about taking students from a design-only model to a mosaic practice where they are able to design and fabricate in collaboration, ultimately installing the public artwork for the community to enjoy. Her artwork can be found in collections nationwide and locally, including the lobby of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Carson. Her most recent practice includes a series of mosaic drawings that use a meditation process. She started MOSAIC ALCHEMY, a company that celebrates the collaborative, creative process and engages participants to work together and enjoy making art together. Betty will lead the Eye on Design program at Bryant and Tincher Elementary!
