Arts Council for Long Beach Announces Artist-Architecture Team Finalists for Mobile Arts and Architecture Phase 2
February 1, 2011
The Arts Council for Long Beach announces finalists for the second phase of the Mobile Arts and Architecture Project. During the first phase, 45 artist-architect teams responded to a Request for Qualifications (RFQ). The Arts Council's selection panel reviewed those submittals and has chosen the following three teams to create conceptual designs for a portable performance venue that will transform vacant lots into creative spaces:
• Formation Association and 64North with Steve Roden, and Buro Happold, Los Angeles
• Cara Lee and Rennie Tang with Sara Wookey
• Taalman Koch Architecture with Kathleen Johnson, Andy Goldman, and Elodie Blanchard
As part of the second phase of the Mobile Art and Architecture Project, the three finalists will be invited to attend a design charrette. During the charrette, the Long Beach Opera and Khmer Arts Academy will act as design consultants. Teams are encouraged to explore the innovative use of materials and technology (e.g. repurposed shipping containers; recycled sails or industrial fabrics; projected digital imagery; new ecologically sound and sustainable materials).
This project is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts Mayor's Institute On City Design 25th Anniversary Initiative (MICD25). The MICD25 supports creative place-making projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform sites into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core.
