Arts Council Receives Grant from Los Angeles County Arts Commission to Commission Impossible Moon for Installation at The Collaborative

September 21, 2011

COLLABORATE

The Arts Council for Long Beach received a $10,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission to
cultivate a new donor base while commissioning artists to create new artwork for The Collaborative, a cultural facility and exhibition space in Downtown Long Beach.

The Cultivate/Create grant must be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis between August 1, 2011 and November 30, 2011 from individual donors, either, newly supporting the Arts Council, or, increasing their level of support. To reach the campaign goal of doubling the $10,000 grant, the Arts Council for Long Beach launched the Cultivate/Create/COLLABORATE campaign, a four-month push to match funding. Any gift given to this initiative is doubled during the campaign - $10 becomes $20, $100 becomes $200 - up to the $10,000 goal. Every dollar raised during the campaign supports artist programming at The Collaborative, marketing and outreach, staff time, supplies and education programs.

This grant will support the commissioning of new artwork by artists Christine Nguyen and Michael Wysong, together the artist team Impossible Moon, selected through an open call-to-artists. Nguyen received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University, Long Beach and her Master of Fine Arts from University of California, Irvine. Wysong is a Long Beach-based artist, and designer. Impossible Moon will present a collection of works including large sculptural elements that will be installed at various locations in Long Beach, where the public will have the opportunity to interact with the pieces prior to their exhibition at The Collaborative. The exhibition explores the process of creating an object's mythology or narrative through these interactions.
