Statement
“Art is life, plus caprice!” – JAMES CAGNEY
Experience

Caprice Spencer Rothe has maintained parallel careers in the Performing, Educational and Visual Arts. She currently is an artist-in-residence @MADE in Long Beach with Lightning Bolt Wonder, working with Makersville.net — a band of creatives bringing youth learning experiences to downtown Long Beach. Best known as the “Hands of ET”, Caprice was an alien specialist in Hollywood [E.T, Cocoon, Flicks] and a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

Ms. Rothe was honored with the Los Angeles Women in Theatre Red Carpet Award in 2010. A theater director who specializes in movement, Caprice has also directed or produced over 50 readings of new plays incuding over 30 with the Arts Council for Long Beach 2012 Long Beach Arts Month. A former Mime and Theatrical Clown, Ms Rothe has directed and appeared in plays with Bard in the Yard, Rude Guerrilla, Primetime Players, SCR and Vanguard Theatre Ensemble.

She has taught Mime, Mask and Movement at Long Beach City College, South Coast Repertory Conservatory, AADA-West and K-12 in LAUSD through Performing Tree, Inc, as well as acting at the Long Beach Senior Center, Shakespeare, mask performance, clowning and voice for the Catalina Island Performing Arts Foundation and mask workshops through Cultural Alliance Long Beach [CALB] and Makersville.net.

A former scenic artist in TV [IATSE local 816] Ms Rothe was also a muralist for McDonalds Restaurants and has worked as a Graphic Artist, Web Designer and Art Director locally for over 20 years. Through her fabric arts project called Wearable Heirlooms (see the facebook page), she designs and sews HAPI COATS and old-fashioned caps from UPCYCLED fabrics.

A prop maker for Knott’s Scary Farm, Caprice has created, designed or collaborated with other artists on MASKS for over a dozen theatrical productions. Her company, co-founded with sculptor Sharon Moore, ABOUT FACE is a collaboration of Visual and Performing Arts. We create masks and the characters who wear them and love to teach others to do the same.
